Gerry was born 10th March 1928 into a large family in Scotland Road where he grew up and went to school. At a young age he had all different jobs, mostly heavy manual work on the building sites. He then went into the army as a gunner in the Royal Artillery. Whilst in there he carried out active service in Korea and the Middle East. After coming out of the army he went back to manual work on the building sites and met his first wife to whom he had two children Marie and Gerry. Sadly his first wife passed away at a young age. One harsh winter when there was little work to be found on the building sites, Gerry got a job in the Royal Insurance where he ended up staying for many years. Whilst working there he met his second wife Tess. They were married for 40 years and had four children, Lesley, Michael, Teresa and Maureen and three grand children, Joshua, Joe and Ella and son in laws Dave and Tony.
Gerry liked his bet and a drop of scotch. Everyone he met throughout his life grew to love and respect him. Gerry was someone who knew the world and his brother. He was a man who was never backward in telling you to go away only not so politely. It was his cheeky smile that allowed him to get away with this. He lived life to the full, loved and enjoyed his family and grand children and they all loved and respected him. Gerry was always surrounded by somebody he could talk to. He was one of lifes true larger than life characters and a real charmer. He could never be replaced and will never be forgotten by all those who knew him.
Apart from the special bond he had with his family who he brought up with lots of love, to respect people, bring no trouble to his door and make something of themselves, he also taught them to be close and to always look after each other.

I have made this memorial page in memory of my dad. He was a mad Liverpool supporter who always had a bet when they were playing and earned the nickname 3-1 Gerry. He drank in Rose Lane Legion where everyone knew and respected him. I have good memories of taking him there on a Saturday night with my sisters when they would have a show on and we would have a drink with him and sing to him. He loved Frank Sinatra and my dads song was My Way which just summed my dad up.
Sadly my dad was diagnosed with cancer again and couldnt fight it this time. He had a good go though they gave him a year but he managed two his doctor at the hospital called him an exception to the rule. In the last couple of months of his life he spent five weeks in hospital where we were told his cancer was spreading and there was no more they could so as my dad wanted we brought him home and looked after him at home. He still kept fighting it and would ask us to take him out. Sadly he lost the fight.

We all miss you loads dad and mums is so quiet without you there. You are in our hearts forever. Love you dad xxxx

To sum Gerry up in the words of Frank Sinatra:
"I DID IT MY WAY"

"YOULL NEVER WALK ALONE GERRY"

We sat beside your bedside
our hearts were crushed and sore.
We sat with you to the end
till we could do no more.
In tears we watched you sinking
we watched you fade away.
And though are hearts were breaking
we knew you could not stay.
You left behind some broken hearts
that loved you most sincere.
We never shall and never will
forget you Husband, Father and Grandad dear.
